FAQ
How do I cook dried mushrooms?
Do not eat dried mushrooms raw. Before cooking, dried mushrooms should be rehydrated. Place them in a bowl, cover with warm water, and let them soak for 15–20 minutes, or until softened.
Once rehydrated, gently squeeze out any excess water and cook them as desired.
For extra flavor, strain the leftover soaking liquid through a coffee filter and use it in soups, broths, sauces, grains, or other savory dishes.
Can I eat Turkey Tail mushrooms?
Turkey Tail mushrooms are not typically eaten like culinary mushrooms. They are tough, woody polypores and are most often enjoyed medicinally through preparations such as tinctures, teas, or extracts. They should not be consumed raw, as their beneficial compounds are locked behind chitin, a tough structural material that requires proper extraction or preparation.
Can I eat Reishi mushrooms?
Reishi mushrooms are not typically eaten like culinary mushrooms. Like Turkey Tail, Reishi is a tough, woody polypore and is most often enjoyed medicinally through tinctures, teas, or extracts. Because its beneficial compounds are locked behind a tough chitin wall, Reishi should be properly prepared or extracted before use and should not be consumed raw.
Can I eat raw gourmet mushrooms?
No, mushrooms should never be consumed raw. Mushrooms are a fungus that needs to be fully cooked before being eaten. Cooking mushrooms allows their benefits to be released, breaking down their cell walls, allowing for easier digestion. It is never recommended to eat raw mushrooms, and doing so may lead to stomach discomfort.
